It’s Nutrition Month...Food! Eff Yeah!!!
Wednesday Mar 05, 2025
Wednesday Mar 05, 2025
So that's not really the theme for this year, but you'll have to listen to hear that origin story...Join Base Dietitian Cheryl Nickurak and I as we tackle the official theme - in all its "robustness" looking at the socio-cultural aspects of food, the trends that she is seeing in her practice and hear her answers to some "questions from the field". Nutrition is about so much more than just food and this conversation considers just how much more and how, in these trying times (on so many levels) food can be the one thing that we can just keep simple, so that we can keep doing what we need to do everyday. In our lives or in our jobs.
If you want to get hold of Cheryl she can be reached at 780-973-4011 ext 6236 or 528-6236 or at cheryl.nickurak@forces.gc.ca

Bell Let’s Talk - A Conversation with the 3 Cdn Div Chaplain about Mental Health
Wednesday Jan 22, 2025
Wednesday Jan 22, 2025
It's that time of year again - January - Blue Monday has come and gone and it's Bell Let's Talk. While the topic of mental health should be talked about openly and authentically all year, BLT is a good excuse to put it front and centre and have conversations that get at the heart of helping to overcome the stigma around talking about mental health, and at it's core is about getting and keeping people well. Joining me for this year's conversation is LCol Jim Hardwick, 3 Cdn Div Chaplain, and I couldn't be more excited. I hope you enjoy this in depth, heartfelt and completely amazing episode - and apologies for the background noise. The HVAC in the media room in the Crystal Palace was a little aggressive.
Below, are some resources that might be helpful to get people started on their road to mental wellness. Remember that asking for help is NOT a sign of weakness - it is a sign of strength and can inspire others to take control of their mental (or any other kind of wellness) too.

Health Promotion Perspectives with HP Mgr Tolulope Oluyemi
Friday Sep 13, 2024
Friday Sep 13, 2024
When people hear or think about Health Promotion (and we know most people don't) it is probably related to the workshops they may have taken, the briefings they may have had to sit through (trust us - we don't love annual briefings either!) or maybe a booth where we were making or handing out samples of food, or talking about Bell Let's Talk or something similar. But what is Health Promotion really all about, particularly here in Edmonton?
If this burning question has been keeping you up at night (and we know it has), then this is the episode for you! Our amazing HP Manager, Tolulope Oluyemi is joining me to talk about his work in health promotion before coming to Canada and ways that we are working to shift what and how we are doing things here. It's a hopeful, fun and informative conversation that will hopefully leave you wanting to both know more and do more, when it comes to creating health promoting habits or opportunities in your life or at your unit!
If you would like to get in touch with us, you can email healthpromotionedmonton@cfmws.com and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
You can also check us out at https://cfmws.ca/support-services/health-wellness/health-promotion where you can register for courses, request briefings or find information about quitting smoking, or go through our back catalogue of previous seasons of Food For Thought!

The Hopes and Dreams Episode
Monday Jun 24, 2024
Monday Jun 24, 2024
It's the end of Season 7...how did we get here already?!?!
A bit of a departure from our past episodes, today Nicole and I talk about hopes and dreams - in terms of things we have upcoming, stuff we're working on and things that we think could really be different if we approached it in a more outside the box and creative way. Mindset is everything when it comes to embracing change, and let's face it, we know that's hard.
So here's our take on what we hope and dream might be able to become reality, if we all find a way to work towards a common goal of being as good as we can be in the circumstances we find ourselves AND perhaps, collectively, working together to help to shift those circumstances to ones where they actually support that mission - helping members be as good as they can be.
Have a great summer - and if you would like to check out what we have on the website, in terms of resources or you would like to sign up for a workshop or book the annual briefing for this year, here is the link to our page:

What Dental Can Teach Us About Workplace Wellness!
Wednesday Apr 17, 2024
Wednesday Apr 17, 2024
When you think about going to Dental at CFB Edmonton, you might be thinking about the last time you flossed or how it's time to get that cavity filled or for that root canal. But when you're there, do you notice anything...different? We did. When my colleagues in Health Promotion came back from a meeting there, they were singing the praises of the different things that had been implemented at Dental to make it an exemplary place to work. So I had to know and I'm happy to share this conversation about what Dental did to make it a fun AND productive place. Every unit or regiment or location is different, but there are things that can be done that will fit the community and culture anywhere, to make any workplace one where people are excited to work, to show up everyday and to contribute and be productive. I'm personally going to take one idea and implement it at Health Promotion, which I am super excited about - listen to the episode to find out what that is!

It's March meaning that there are many themes happening - Nutrition Month which we've covered before, but it's also Social Work month, Addictions month, Neurodiversity month and I want to talk about all of them, as well as throw in some props for Sleep.
